To become a Uruguayan resident, four steps are necessary:

What documents do I need?

Documents are personal and, depending on the case, they may vary according to the solution we understand best for your situation. You will always need personal documentation. Some of the most common are vaccines information, birth certificates and criminal records.

If I become a Uruguayan resident, do I lose my country’s citizenship?

No. By becoming resident of a country, you will remain a citizen of your country of origin. While enjoying the rights of living in Uruguay, the conditions to live in your home country will remain unchanged.

Can I carry out the entire procedure from my country or do I have to go to Uruguay?

Depending on the country where you are currently based, and the state and format of your documentation, we will tell you if hearings should be held in Uruguay or we can start the process through the embassy.

To become a Uruguayan resident, do I have to live in Uruguay?

No, it is not necessary to live in Uruguay to process your residency.
This requirement is only mandatory if you wish to apply to a tax residece for taxation in Uruguay.

How do I get a Uruguayan tax residence?

To obtain the tax residence in Uruguay, certain conditions must be met. Some of the most common include:
Staying in Uruguay during 183 days in one calendar year.
Investing approx. USD 500,000 and staying in Uruguay during 60 days in one calendar year.
Owning an investment in Uruguay of approx. USD 2,000,000 prior to July 2020 and still having it as of the date of the application.
